Kurgo Crash Tested Harness

September 15, 2020

<< Previous Post Next Post >>

Safety on a motorbike is so important for both the rider and the dog. It's easy to know what gear to buy for a person and to get lots of advice on the different brands, materials etc. but it's a lot harder for pets. For a few years we were using regular walking harnesses for Weeti and Shadow when we were riding, purely out of naivety. We simply didn’t think about the importance of the strength of the harness in the event of an accident. We also didn’t know there was any other option. The pivotal moment for us, however, was when Shadow got out of her harness when we were riding through a town. Fortunately we realised quickly before she hurt herself but it was really scary and made us acutely aware of the importance of the harness.

We did a lot of online research, visited a lot of pet shops and decided upon buying a Kurgo Crash Tested harness for Shadow to see how it went. Harnesses for small dogs can be more complicated to get a good fit. We came up with a list of requirements for the harness:

  • comfortable with no chafing or rubbing;
  • secure so the dog can’t wriggle out of it or reverse out of it;
  • durable so it lasts a long time without stitching undoing or clips braking;
  • strong clips or connection that will withstand regular use and force in the event of an accident.

People often complain at the price of pet products but paying for safety is an investment in your dogs health and well being. Dogs also come in many shapes, sizes and temperaments so it can be a risk purchasing a product (especially online) to have it just not work for your dog once you’ve used it and can no longer return it. We knew that if the Kurgo harness worked for Shadow then it would be fine for Weeti.

We were really impressed with the quality of all the individual components of the Kurgo Enhanced Strength Tru-Fit Dog Car Harness. The weight, width and thickness of the webbing is well chosen to be both strong and comfortable on a dog with no slippage (some cheap harnesses loosen over time and can slip so they don’t fit properly). The chest piece adds a lot of comfort on long rides and when walking. The clips are steel and interlock so there can’t be any failure like a plastic clip breaking or losing a tooth.

We trialled the Kurgo harness on Shadow for a few months and were still really happy with its performance so we purchased one for Weeti. They now both ride with their Kurgo harnesses and we very confidently recommend it to other riders with biker dogs.

The Kurgo crash tested harness retails from USD $44.99. For more information or to purchase a harness please visit Kurgo Enhanced Strength Tru-Fit Dog Car Harness.  If you have any questions or comments for us please pop them in the comment form below.
